Not far from Autun, this chateau in over 40 acres of land was re-built in uncompromising baronial style in the late 19th century. Moat, drawbridge, towers, multi-coloured tile roof, and an external chapel set the tone. But the immense entrance hall with its painted beam ceiling and patterned floor-tiles, with at one end the monumental staircase, still causes an intake of breath as it must have when first built. The dining room and huge living room continue in the same vein. The modern kitchen, though of decent proportions, is rather dwarfed by its neighbouring rooms, while the original kitchens are in the basement, vast and untouched for a century, with the small porcelain plaques bearing the names of the original masters who were attended on by the doubtless numerous staff. The main bedrooms on the first floor have their own individual style (one in the Chinese mode) mostly have small private bathrooms, the bedrooms at the back rather less, while on the second floor the bedrooms are largely unrenovated. The grounds include a swimming pool and tennis court.
