The village West of Vichy has a lovely Romanesque church, and it is the church rather than the chateau which immediately arrests the visitor's attention. But behind its parkland trees and its high surrounding walls, the chateau with its mediaeval keep and massive corner towers is grand enough to make the visitor wonder how he failed to notice it. Various epochs have transformed and enlarged this property, and in the past thirty years it has been rescued from decadence and magnificently restored in keeping with its character (which justifies its being listed with the French Historical Monuments). High, light entrance hall with grand staircase, with beyond it a lovely vaulted room, and then the main reception rooms: the salon has an 18th century overlay, with plastered ceiling and pretty fireplace, the dining room with panelling and fine ceiling, the modestly named office which is in reality a huge room with exposed ceiling beams, tapestries on the walls and a lovely fireplace. In each of the corner towers a bedroom with private bathroom. Upstairs the central room is a Long Gallery, off which are five bedrooms of individual styles (two simple ones, with high windows and massive stone walls, one a suite with private bathroom, one charmingly decorated in so-called Ottoman style, one a corner tower bedroom, with private bathroom again) plus one which is as yet unrenovated. On the second floor a huge room with underfloor heating serves as a study/family room, a library, and more bedrooms - the views from every room on this floor are all that could be expected, onto the five-acres grounds and over the surrounding countryside. A separate outbuilding with two corner wings is largely unrenovated: this was once the stable block amongst other things. Beyond it is the swimming pool, private and well-separated from the rest of the grounds. Two small buildings at the entrance once served for gatekeepers. The grounds are lawn and a profusion of mature trees (with the odd hen wandering through them). A place of enchantment. Paris is three hours' drive along one of France's Least frequented motorways, and Vichy and Clermont Ferrand about half an hour at most.
