The site dates back to mediaeval times, but little of the original building survived the thorough re-building carried out in the 1860's. Yet what a re-building! The multi-coloured patterned roofs remind us of Burgundy's most famous building, the hospice in Beaune (a Flemish style admittedly, but fiercely adopted by Burgundy), freely interpreted in the Romantic style with a multitude of towers, and set against the backdrop of the thick woodland the chateau has a unique charm as we approach from the valley below. Over thirty acres of land, mostly deciduous forest, form the setting. And does the house live up to its promise? The architect gave it a functional yet impressive interior : reception rooms to either side of the entrance hall, each with original fireplaces and good patterned parquet floors (the period feel is very strong), and opening from one of them a corner tower room, office/library. The dining room has painted ceiling beams and off it the present-day kitchen (for the original kitchen, complete with stone fireplace with Latin inscription placed by the family who re-built in 1865, is in the basement). A corridor leads to a smaller room which could be office or occasional bedroom, and finally a billiard room, next to which is another tower with spiral staircase (originally destined for the staff who could reach each floor, and their own attic bedrooms, without disturbing their masters). Upstairs, much the same pattern : above the reception rooms, two bedrooms (the views are lovely) with one of them having a corner tower, a bathroom, then two more bedrooms and bathrooms and a large room which could be an extra bedroom. The attic bedrooms above have not been used since the time when there was domestic staff - a long time ago - and would need very substantial renovation. There is also an attic space with good roof beams. But as it is the house is of a manageable size, not the kind of chateau which has endless corridors and dozens of Spartan bedrooms, reminiscent of a pre-war provincial hotel. The outbuildings are a former stable block, with a long external gallery, now used as exhibition space, a charming estate manager's house with two main rooms, a bedroom and bathroom, and a pond in front of it. Plus a double bread oven. In all a property of great period charm, reasonable in size and in a generally good state of repair, though some re-wiring and re-plumbing would not come amiss.
